Oil painting of Tilly

I found a book about pigments in a second hand bookshop in Weardale. Its fascinating what natural materials colours are made from! I then ordered some colours from Old Holland who have been making oil paints for a long time. I then watched a couple of You Tube videos on technique. I have painted before with acrylics, but after using oils, with the wonderful tactile experience of smells, and smoothness I much prefer oils.

I had photographed Tilly on a portrait session. What was most pleasing was that she liked her portrait, and I took it into school to show to her class and to talk about how I painted it. When I first photographed Tilly she was shy and not keen, but she relaxed through the session. To then later see her smiling face in school full of pride about her painting was a real joy for me.
